Blind Nigerians Demand Inclusive Employment in Bauchi
By Abdulwahab Muhammad, Bauchi
The Bauchi State Chapter of the Nigeria Association of the Blind has called on the state government to prioritize the employment of blind graduates, emphasizing the need for equal opportunities in the workforce.
In a press release issued Wednesday, the association urged the Bauchi State Government, National Assembly members from the state, and key stakeholders to take decisive action in ensuring that blind individuals are not left behind in employment and leadership roles.
Titled "Inclusive Employment for Blind Graduates in Bauchi State," the statement, signed by the association’s secretary, Shafi'u Usman, expressed concern over the persistent challenges blind graduates face despite their qualifications. It called for immediate interventions, including job training programs, mentorship schemes, and inclusive hiring policies.
“As we move forward, we urge those in elected positions to consider persons with disabilities in their appointments, ensuring equal access to opportunities,” the statement read.
The association also demanded accessible education for blind students, including Braille materials, audio descriptions, and sign language interpretation. Additionally, they called for disability-inclusive scholarship programs and the appointment of persons with disabilities to key advisory and legislative roles.
“We believe everyone deserves equal opportunities, regardless of ability. Let us work together to build a more inclusive society,” the statement concluded.
