Bauchi State Commemorates World Cancer Day 2025 with Renewed Commitment to Cancer Fight
Bauchi, Nigeria – February 4, 2025 – The First Lady of Bauchi State, in collaboration with the Chief Medical Director of the State Specialist Hospital, Bauchi, led the commemoration of World Cancer Day 2025, emphasizing the urgent need for awareness, early detection, and improved healthcare access in the fight against cancer.
Speaking at the State Specialist Hospital Conference Hall, the First Lady highlighted the devastating impact of cancer in Nigeria, referencing 127,763 new cases and 79,542 fatalities recorded in 2022. She reaffirmed the commitment of the Almuhibbah Foundation in providing essential healthcare support, including:
- Provision of ambulances for emergency response in rural areas.
- Financial assistance for cancer patients struggling with medical bills.
- Construction of hospitals in Jamda and Alkaleri to enhance healthcare access.
- Over 5,000 medical outreaches focused on screening and early detection.
- Over 7,000 eye surgeries conducted to restore sight.
The Chief Medical Director underscored the alarming rise of breast, prostate, and cervical cancers, which account for over 50% of cases in Nigeria. He emphasized the importance of early screening through Pap smears, mammograms, and PSA tests, which are now available at the newly activated Oncology Unit of the State Specialist Hospital, Bauchi. The unit also offers MRI and CT scans, chemotherapy, and surgical interventions for cancer treatment.
He further announced the government’s commitment to strengthening cancer care, with plans to engage oncologists, pathologists, and laboratory scientists to provide world-class cancer management, research, and mentorship in Bauchi State.
The event concluded with a call to action, urging individuals to prioritize regular cancer screenings, adopt healthy lifestyles, and advocate for better healthcare policies to combat cancer.
His Excellency, Governor Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed, CON, was praised for his visionary leadership and support in advancing healthcare initiatives, including the expansion of cancer care services in the state.
