Gombe, Nigeria – March 9, 2025

By, Abdulwahab Muhammad, Bauchi

The Federal Government has officially approved the takeover and conversion of the newly reconstructed Kumo General Hospital into a Federal Medical Centre (FMC), marking a significant step toward improving healthcare delivery in Gombe State and the Northeast region.

Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya expressed deep appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for approving the request, emphasizing that the move aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda and will enhance access to quality medical services.

"This development will no doubt enhance the delivery of quality healthcare services to our people in Gombe State and our neighboring states," Governor Yahaya stated.

The 200-bed ultramodern facility will serve as a teaching hospital for medical students from the Federal University of Kashere and Lincoln University, Kumo, ensuring the availability of a skilled healthcare workforce in the state.

The economic and social impact of the conversion is expected to be significant, with job creation for healthcare professionals, increased federal investment in medical infrastructure, and improved healthcare access for millions of residents.

Governor Yahaya reiterated his administration’s commitment to strengthening healthcare, citing previous achievements such as:

  • Remodeling of the Gombe Specialist Hospital and two general hospitals in Bajoga and Kaltungo.
  • Construction of a brand-new General Hospital in Kumo.
  • Revitalization of 114 Primary Healthcare Centres across the state.

With this development, Gombe joins the league of states benefiting from federal-level medical infrastructure, reducing the burden on existing facilities and ensuring affordable, high-quality healthcare for residents.
