Hunters Demand Justice Over Killing of 16 Members in Edo

By Abdulwahab Muhammad Bauchi

Bauchi, Nigeria – The Sarkin Bakan Hausawan Africa, Alhaji Abashe Garba, has called on both the Edo State and federal governments to take swift and decisive action in bringing to justice those responsible for the brutal killing of 16 hunters in Uromi, Edo State.

Addressing journalists in Bauchi on Monday, Alhaji Abashe expressed deep concern over the killings, which he described as senseless and unjust. He emphasized that this was not the first time Northerners had been victims of violent attacks in parts of Southern Nigeria.

The victims, all of Northern origin, were reportedly returning from Rivers State en route to Kano when they were ambushed and killed by a vigilante group in Udune Efandion, a community in Uromi, Esan North-East Local Government Area.

“We want the government to take immediate action to ensure all those involved in the killings are apprehended and punished according to the law,” Alhaji Abashe said.

He extended condolences to the families of the deceased and to the Hausa leadership under Alhaji Abdulkadir Dahiru Koguna. He also offered prayers for the souls of the departed, urging authorities to ensure justice prevails to serve as a deterrent to future violence.

Responding to reports that loca

l guns were found on the victims, Alhaji Abashe clarified that the deceased were registered hunters and legally permitted to carry firearms for hunting purposes. He noted that their activities are well-organized and supported by official identification cards.

“Hunters use guns as tools of their trade; it’s impossible to hunt with bare hands. From ancient times to now, we’ve used weapons to deal with wild animals,” he said.

Highlighting the role of hunters in enhancing security, Alhaji Abashe cited past efforts in Bauchi State where hunters assisted in combating criminal elements. He recounted incidents in Ningi and Magama Gumau where hunters engaged and defeated kidnappers, helping restore peace to the affected areas.

He appealed to the government and the public to continue supporting the hunters in recognition of their contributions to national peace and security.
