Muslim Leaders Call for Unity, Integrity, and Youth Empowerment at 27th National Umma Convention

By Abdulwahab Muhammad Bauchi

Bauchi, Nigeria – Muslim leaders from across the country have called on the Nigerian Muslim Umma to remain steadfast in their contributions toward national development, despite the socio-economic and security challenges facing the nation.

Speaking at the 27th National Umma Convention organized by the National Islamic Center at Sultan Sa’ad Abubakar Pilgrims Camp, Bauchi, former Kano State Governor and serving Senator, Ibrahim Shekarau, encouraged Muslims not to be discouraged by prevailing hardships.

“The challenges facing the Muslim Umma are surmountable,” he said. “I advise that people should vote for good leaders—even if they are from the Devil’s party—so long as they possess integrity and a genuine interest in the people’s welfare.”

In his address, Professor Muhammad Babangida Muhammad, National Chairman of the Muslim Umma, traced the origins of the National Islamic Center to 1980. It was established as an initiative of the Umma Movement by members of the Muslim Students Society who sought to continue their service to the community after their academic journey.

“Over the last five decades, the Muslim Umma has consistently promoted unity, good governance, and national cohesion,” Professor Babangida stated.

He expressed concern about the worsening security situation in Nigeria and urged the government at all levels to prioritize agriculture and vocational skills acquisition as a way to steer youths away from criminal activities.

Representing the Emir of Bauchi, Alhaji Rilwanu Suleman Adamu, Galadiman Bauchi, Surveyor Sa’idu Ibrahim Jahun, acknowledged that Nigeria is grappling with complex social and economic issues that are impeding development. He called on state and local governments to implement multifaceted strategies that empower young people through practical skills.

In his remarks, the Bauchi State Governor, Senator Bala Abdulkadir Muhammad, who was represented by his deputy, Muhammad Auwal Jatau, pledged to integrate the outcomes of the forum into the policy framework of his administration.

He noted that youth challenges are often a result of lack of guidance and community support, emphasizing that the problems confronting Nigeria are not limited to any one group or region.

“All hands must be on deck to address these national concerns,” he said.

The convention featured several prominent speakers including Malam Kabir Abdullahi Yusuf, Chairman of Media Trust, and Professor Sa’id Ahmad Dukawa of Bayero University, Kano, among others.

The event served as a platform for reflection, collaboration, and action toward building a more cohesive and progressive Nigeria.
