Gombe Ranks 4th Nationally in Digital Tax Administration

...‘Our Ranking Reflects Gov Inuwa Yahaya’s Commitment to Innovation and Smart Economy’ – GIRS Chair

From Abdulwahab Muhammad Bauchí

Gombe State has reaffirmed its position as one of Nigeria’s most reform-oriented subnational entities by emerging 4th in the latest national ranking on digital maturity in tax administration.

The ranking was unveiled at a high-level Validation Workshop on Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) and the Intelligence Revenue Authority (IRA) Index Tools, organized by the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) in collaboration with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, held in Abuja.

Gombe scored an impressive 80.6%, securing a top-tier position alongside Bayelsa, Borno, Kano, and Delta States, all of which surpassed the 80% mark in overall performance.

The evaluation focused on critical indicators of digital capability, including:

  • Digital onboarding of taxpayers
  • Integration with national identity and payment systems
  • Automation of compliance monitoring
  • Data security frameworks
  • Use of advanced analytics
  • Digital proficiency of tax personnel

Representing Gombe State at the

workshop was the Executive Chairman of the Gombe State Internal Revenue Service (GIRS), Aisha Adamu, FCNA, whose leadership has catalyzed a sweeping transformation of the state’s revenue ecosystem. Her administration has been marked by full digitization of tax processes, deployment of taxpayer-friendly platforms, plugging of revenue leakages, and improvement of service delivery – all of which have led to increased voluntary compliance and sustained growth in internally generated revenue.

Speaking at the event, Aisha Adamu attributed the state’s stellar performance to the visionary leadership of Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, CON, whose consistent investment in digital infrastructure, institutional reforms, and capacity building has laid a solid foundation for fiscal innovation.

“This milestone is a direct reflection of His Excellency’s unwavering commitment to innovation and excellence in governance,” she stated.

“We are honoured by this recognition and remain focused on advancing towards a smart and inclusive economy. Our appreciation goes to the people and taxpayers of Gombe State—your support and compliance are the real enablers of this achievement.”

The GIRS Chairman also lauded her team’s professionalism and dedication, emphasizing that the recognition is not only a validation of their efforts, but also a renewed call to action.

“We see this not as a destination, but as a starting point to continue pushing boundaries in building a digitally resilient and transparent tax system,” she added.

Gombe’s performance in this national digital tax assessment underscores its emergence as a trailblazer in technology-driven governance and smart economic management. Under the leadership of Governor Inuwa Yahaya, the state is steadily advancing on a path of sustainable development, anchored in innovation, transparency, and digital transformation.
