Ali Pate is Not an Opportunist
By: Ahmed Muhammed
Recent criticisms against Professor Mohammed Ali Pate by certain politically motivated individuals are both laughable and disappointing. As Nigeria’s Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Development, Pate has built an impeccable track record in public service, making his contributions far superior to many politicians in Bauchi State.
Pate’s achievements speak for themselves. As a trained medical doctor, former Director-General of the National Primary Healthcare Development Agency (NPHCDA), and Minister of State for Health, he has played a crucial role in improving healthcare in Nigeria. He led efforts to upgrade primary healthcare centers, train frontline health workers, and enhance vaccine delivery, including the introduction of the human papillomavirus vaccine. His leadership also helped attract investors to the health sector and facilitated a swift response to the 2023 diphtheria outbreak.
Beyond Nigeria, Pate served as the Global Director for Health, Nutrition, and Population at the World Bank and led its Global Financing Facility, demonstrating his competence on an international scale. His tenure as CEO of Big Win Philanthropy further showcased his commitment to youth empowerment and development. His influence in repositioning Nigeria’s teaching hospitals has made them more responsive to the needs of Nigerians.
Despite these accomplishments, some critics have attempted to undermine his reputation for political reasons. As a Bauchi citizen, media consultant, and political analyst, I find it necessary to set the record straight. Professor Pate is not a political opportunist—his vast experience, academic background, and dedication to national development prove otherwise. The recent attacks on him are merely attempts to score cheap political points.
Bauchi State is at a crossroads, and as the 2027 elections approach, the need for competent leadership becomes even more evident. Professor Pate’s leadership qualities, integrity, and vision for transformational governance make him a strong contender if he chooses to run for the governorship. His policies would prioritize healthcare, education, economic growth, and infrastructure, all of which Bauchi desperately needs.
Politics in Bauchi is always intense, with citizens deeply invested in governance. However, what the state requires is a people-oriented executive and a strong legislature that prioritizes development over personal interests. If Bauchi is to progress, it needs leaders like Pate, who focus on service delivery rather than political rhetoric.
Currently, Pate remains committed to his national duties and the unity of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Bauchi. He understands that for the party to succeed in 2027, it must be united. His leadership is not about personal ambition but about strengthening the party, supporting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, and fostering progress in Bauchi.
Ultimately, Bauchi’s future depends on visionary leadership. Whether or not Pate decides to contest in 2027, his credentials and dedication to public service are undeniable. The state needs transformational leaders who can bring real progress, not political actors focused on division and self-interest.
