By Abdulwahab Muhammad , Bauchi

The Bauchi State Government has launched the 2025 Irrigation Support Program to enhance agricultural productivity and promote commercial farming in the state. The initiative aims to reduce food inflation and attract investors by shifting from subsistence farming to large-scale production.

Speaking at the official launch in Unguwar Datti, Zungur Town, Bauchi Local Government Area, on Tuesday, Governor Bala Mohammed, represented by his Deputy, Hon. Muhammad Auwal Jatau, emphasized his administration's commitment to transforming the agricultural sector. He highlighted key achievements, including the provision of mechanized farming tools, improved seeds, and the revival of the Bauchi Fertilizer Company to boost local production.

The governor called on the private sector to support mechanized farming, noting that such collaboration would enhance food production in Bauchi State and Nigeria at large.

In his remarks, the State Commissioner for Agriculture, Iliyasu Aliyu Gital, stressed the importance of dry-season farming in ensuring food security. He noted that the state government has prioritized agriculture since the inception of the present administration, with positive results beginning to manifest. He assured that the Ministry of Agriculture would continue to produce high-quality fertilizer to sustain the state's reputation in the sector.

The Executive Chairman of Bauchi Local Government Area, Mahmud Baba Ma’aji, underscored the significance of the farming inputs provided to irrigation farmers. He said the program would complement the federal government’s Irrigate Nigeria initiative, aimed at enhancing food security. He also cautioned beneficiaries against selling the distributed items.

The Emir of Bauchi, Alhaji Rilwanu Sulaiman Adamu, represented by the Galadiman Bauchi, Surveyor Ibrahim Adamu Jumba, commended the state government for its efforts in boosting food production. He urged farmers to utilize the tools effectively to contribute to national food security.

Items distributed during the event included power tillers, crop seeds, water pumping machines, and fertilizers.
