By Abdulwahab Muhammad, Bauchi
The ancient town of Gumau, headquarters of Lame District in Toro Local Government Area of Bauchi State, recently hosted a grand durbar celebration—Hawan Mamman Kusu—drawing guests from Bauchi, Kano, Jigawa, Kaduna, and Plateau States. The event showcased the rich cultural heritage of the people and commemorated the legacy of the first Sarkin Yakin Bauchi, Mamman Kusu.
The colorful festival aimed to promote unity, peace, and cultural pride by displaying the district’s unique traditions to a broader audience. The durbar featured horseback processions, traditional music, dances, and various cultural performances.
Our correspondent reports that the venue—Gumau Central Primary School—was filled to capacity. Dignitaries in attendance included traditional rulers, community leaders, members of the Bauchi State House of Assembly, federal lawmakers, members of the State Executive Council, and sons and daughters of Lame District.
The highlight of the celebration was the arrival of the District Head of Lame, Sarkin Yakin Bauchi, Alhaji Aliyu Yakubu Lame, whose grand entrance was met with a standing ovation. Wards and village heads, along with various ethnic groups adorned in colorful traditional regalia, cheered his arrival, marking the official commencement of the event.
In his address, Alhaji Aliyu Yakubu Lame called on his subjects to embrace peace, love, and unity. He emphasized the durbar’s role in fostering togetherness, preserving culture, and commemorating the sacrifices of their forefather, Mamman Kusu.
“As descendants of Mamman Kusu, this durbar and cultural dance celebration bring us together to strengthen peace and unity while sharing in our heritage and the joy of Eid-el-Fitr,” he stated.
He also encouraged farmers in the district to adopt both wet and dry season farming to boost food security, reduce poverty, and fight hunger. Furthermore, he urged stakeholders to leverage culture as a unifying force across Toro Local Government, Bauchi State, and Nigeria at large.
The district head emphasized the need to sustain cultural values as a tool for social harmony and national unity. He noted that the Mamman Kusu Durbar, now in its fifth edition, was initiated to honor a legacy deeply significant to Bauchi
