As Governor Bala Mohammed marks six years in office, Bauchi State celebrates a remarkable era of transformation characterized by significant progress across key sectors. His administration’s commitment to inclusive governance, sustainable development, and improved quality of life has positioned Bauchi as a model of effective leadership in Nigeria.

Education: Building Foundations for the Future

Governor Mohammed’s administration has prioritized education, achieving a drastic reduction in the number of out-of-school children—from 1.2 million to about 521,000. The government has invested heavily in infrastructure, renovating and constructing over 300 primary and secondary schools and building more than 5,000 classrooms. Teacher recruitment and retraining programs have enhanced educational quality, while financial support covering exam fees for over 14,000 students has eased access to formal education.

In line with preparing youth for the digital age, the administration has modernized exam infrastructure and provided ICT training for both students and teachers, fostering a tech-savvy generation ready to meet future challenges.

Healthcare: Reviving Access and Quality

The health sector has witnessed profound improvements. Numerous general hospitals and primary healthcare centers have been constructed or refurbished, expanding access to quality medical services across the state. The flagship “Bauchi Healthcare Revival” project aims to ensure every community has access to healthcare within a reasonable distance.

These initiatives have contributed to a reduction in maternal and infant mortality rates, signaling enhanced wellbeing for Bauchi’s populace.

Agriculture: Empowering Farmers and Enhancing Food Security

Agricultural revitalization is a cornerstone of the administration’s economic strategy. Over 8,000 metric tons of fertilizer have been produced, and 1,000 young farmers trained in modern farming techniques. Distribution of fertilizers to more than 10,000 farmers has boosted yields and positioned Bauchi as a food production hub.

Water Supply: Ensuring Life-Giving Resources

Water supply improvements have been achieved through a ₦20 billion project, in partnership with the World Bank. The initiative includes a 150-kilometer pipeline, a large transmission main from Gubi Dam to Warinje Reservoir, and the construction of seven million-liter reservoirs. Additionally, over 3,000 hand-boreholes have been sunk across all 20 local government areas to ease water scarcity.

Economic Empowerment: Supporting Local Entrepreneurs

The Kaura Economic Empowerment Programme (KEEP) has launched several initiatives, including:

  • Distribution of 156 commercial buses to NURTW members across the state.
  • Provision of 1,500 tricycles to Okada unions.
  • Micro-grants of ₦50,000 each to petty traders.
  • ₦75 million allocated per LGA for youth and women empowerment programs.
  • ₦500 million in soft loans to traders and artisans.

These programs have stimulated grassroots economic activity, fostering self-reliance and job creation.

Security: Building a Peaceful State

To enhance security, the government equipped military and paramilitary agencies with over 50 operational vehicles and recruited 2,000 local hunters to support crime prevention efforts. These measures have contributed to Bauchi’s reputation as one of Nigeria’s safest states.

Infrastructure Development: Roads, Housing, and Power

The administration has constructed over 1,000 kilometers of roads, including key routes such as Burga to Yelwan Duguri, Itas to Gadau, and urban township roads in Azare, Misau, Jama’are, and Ningi. Major dualization projects on Kano Airport Road, Maiduguri Road, and Jos Road have improved urban mobility. The ongoing construction of flyovers at Wunti and Central Market further enhances traffic flow.

Housing initiatives include the completion of 2,500 housing units across six emirate councils. Power supply improvements at Yankari Game Reserve and the introduction of solar projects in Bauchi metropolis have boosted tourism and urban security.

International Partnerships and Sustainable Development

Governor Bala Mohammed’s administration has fostered partnerships with organizations such as the World Bank, UNICEF, and international governments (China, Canada, UK, UAE) to support projects in education, healthcare, and infrastructure. Environmental campaigns, including tree planting and sanitation drives, combat desertification and promote public health.

Conclusion

Governor Bala Mohammed’s six-year tenure reflects a strategic and results-driven leadership focused on sustainable growth, social inclusion, and economic empowerment. His administration’s transformative initiatives across education, healthcare, agriculture, infrastructure, and security continue to improve the lives of Bauchi residents and set a high standard for governance in Nigeria.
