📰 Mokwa Flood Tragedy: Northern Governors Commiserate With Niger State, Advocate Urgent Flood Mitigation Measures

The Chairman of the Northern States Governors’ Forum and Governor of Gombe State, His Excellency Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, CON, has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic floods that struck Mokwa Local Government Area of Niger State, describing the incident as a national tragedy that calls for urgent, coordinated action.

In a statement issued on behalf of the Northern Governors, Governor Inuwa Yahaya extended heartfelt condolences to the government and people of Niger State over the catastrophic flooding that occurred on Wednesday, 28th May 2025.


🚨 Widespread Devastation, Loss of Lives

Triggered by torrential rainfall, the disaster claimed several lives, left many others missing, and displaced hundreds of residents. It also destroyed homes, farmlands, and public infrastructure, plunging entire communities into grief and uncertainty.

Governor Inuwa Yahaya described the scale of destruction as “heartbreaking” and called for intensified efforts from all stakeholders to ensure both immediate relief and long-term recovery for those affected.


🛑 Call for Climate Resilience and Proactive Measures

“This tragic event highlights the growing threat of climate-induced disasters and the urgent need for sustainable flood control and resilience strategies across Northern Nigeria,” the Governor emphasized.

He commended the swift response of the Niger State Government under Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago, as well as the dedication of emergency management agencies who are working tirelessly to provide humanitarian aid and restore normalcy.


🤝 Solidarity, Relief and Recovery

Governor Inuwa Yahaya affirmed the solidarity of the Northern Governors with the people of Niger State and assured that the Forum would continue to support efforts aimed at bringing relief to victims and rebuilding affected communities.

He also urged well-meaning Nigerians, corporate organizations, and development partners to join hands in providing relief materials and in supporting broader disaster mitigation initiatives.

“As we mourn with bereaved families and stand with the displaced, we are ready to work hand-in-hand with Niger State in taking decisive, forward-looking steps to prevent future tragedies,” Governor Inuwa Yahaya stated.
