🕯️ Northern Governors Express Grief Over Fatal Accident Involving Kano Athletes

The Chairman of the Northern States Governors’ Forum (NSGF) and Governor of Gombe State, His Excellency Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, CON, has expressed profound sorrow over the tragic death of 19 athletes from Kano State who perished in a fatal road accident while returning from the 22nd National Sports Festival – Gateway Games 2025 – held in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
💔 A Loss Beyond Words
In a heartfelt statement issued on behalf of Northern Governors, Governor Inuwa Yahaya described the incident as heartbreaking and deeply painful, stating that the entire Northern region mourns the loss of these young and promising athletes.
“These young athletes were more than representatives of Kano State; they were shining symbols of hope and promise for our region and the entire nation,” the Governor said.
“Their exploits at the sports festival made us proud, and their untimely deaths are a painful reminder of life’s fragility.”
🤝 Solidarity With Kano State
Governor Yahaya extended condolences to the Governor of Kano State, Engr. Abba Kabir Yusuf, the entire government, and the bereaved families of the victims.
He emphasized the Forum’s commitment to stand by the people of Kano during this difficult and sorrowful time, praying for the peaceful repose of the souls of the deceased and strength for their families, teammates, and the wider sporting community in Kano and across Nigeria.
“As a Forum, we share in the grief and are committed to supporting the government and people of Kano State as they navigate this dark moment.”
