Recent developments have removed any lingering doubts about the fate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Kebbi State. Once a major political force, the PDP has now been reduced to a shadow of its former self—clinging to relevance, but ultimately unable to survive the blows it has suffered.

The most devastating of these was the recent defection of all three senators elected under the PDP in 2023—Senators Adamu Aliero, Garba Maidoki, and Yahaya Abdullahi—to the All Progressives Congress (APC). Their exit has severed the party’s last lifelines, effectively spelling its end in the state.

When a political party loses its most influential leaders, the ability to regroup and compete becomes nearly impossible. These senators were the backbone of the PDP in Kebbi, navigating it through storms and setbacks. Their departure is akin to top generals walking away from a battlefield—demoralizing, disorienting, and devastating for the rank and file.

Their political careers are marked by resilience, strategy, and the rare ability to win elections even in a predominantly APC terrain. That they thrived under the PDP banner in such a climate speaks volumes. Now, with their move to the APC, the balance of power has shifted irrevocably.

The emergence of Governor Dr. Nasir Idris has further tilted the scales. With his purposeful leadership and growing popularity, the APC is more entrenched than ever. Any hopes of a PDP resurgence by 2027 have been extinguished. The political landscape in Kebbi is now overwhelmingly one-sided, and the APC stands unchallenged.

While some observers may express concern over the implications of a one-party system, particularly for democratic pluralism, Kebbi presents a different case. In a state where the multi-party framework failed to deliver meaningful infrastructure, economic growth, or unified governance, the current political consolidation offers new possibilities.

Governor Nasir Idris has demonstrated transparency, inclusiveness, and a strong commitment to development. Under such leadership, a unified political front might not only be beneficial but necessary. If a one-party setup results in tangible progress and improved governance, it is a model worth exploring.

The demise of the PDP is, without doubt, a significant moment in Kebbi’s political history. But as we bid farewell to the old, we welcome a future filled with renewed hope. If this shift produces more leaders of the caliber of Nasir Idris, then Kebbi is on the right path—toward unity, growth, and prosperity

End
