Democracy Day: Gombe, a Model of Democratic Success – Gov Inuwa Yahaya
…As Nigeria Marks 26 Years of Uninterrupted Civilian Rule
From Abdulwahab Muhammad Bauchí
Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, CON, has hailed the transformation and sustained development in Gombe State as compelling evidence of the enduring benefits of democratic governance in Nigeria.
In a Democracy Day goodwill message to mark June 12, Governor Inuwa Yahaya emphasized that the remarkable progress recorded across key sectors in Gombe—such as infrastructure, healthcare, education, agriculture, youth empowerment, and industrialization—is a direct outcome of purposeful leadership, policy consistency, and the enabling environment provided by democracy.
“From a modest beginning, Gombe has emerged as one of the fastest growing states in Nigeria,” the Governor noted.
“Our success story is rooted in democratic governance, visionary planning, and the resilience of our people.”
He highlighted landmark projects like the Network 11-100 roads, environmental restoration initiatives, education and healthcare revitalization, the DEVAGOM economic blueprint, and various institutional reforms as practical demonstrations of how democracy can deliver real and sustainable development when grounded in accountability, transparency, and inclusivity.
“Democracy has become more than an ideal; it is the foundation upon which our people access quality public services, infrastructure, and economic opportunity,” he stated.
While acknowledging the challenges faced on the democratic journey, Governor Inuwa Yahaya stressed that 26 years of uninterrupted civilian rule in Nigeria remains a remarkable achievement, especially on a continent often plagued by political instability and authoritarianism.
“As the largest democracy in Africa, Nigeria has consistently upheld democratic principles despite complex socio-political and economic challenges,” the Governor remarked.
“Our peaceful transitions and resilience in the face of adversity are signs of democratic maturity.”
As Chairman of the Northern States Governors’ Forum, Governor Yahaya extended warm congratulations to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and all champions of democracy across Nigeria, recognizing their sacrifices and dedication to the preservation and growth of democratic governance.
He described Democracy Day as a time to honor the contributions of the Judiciary, Legislature, Civil Society, and other democratic institutions, and to reflect on the shared values of freedom, justice, and national unity.
Governor Inuwa Yahaya also commended the media for its critical role in advancing democratic culture, while urging practitioners to guard against the dangers of fake news and divisive rhetoric.
“Our administration remains committed to building a peaceful, inclusive, and prosperous Gombe—a true model of democratic success,” he affirmed.
“We shall continue to pursue policies that prioritize the welfare and aspirations of our people.”
He called on citizens to remain united, law-abiding, and prayerful, emphasizing that the collective effort of all Nigerians is vital to building a stronger, more stable, and truly democratic nation.
