The Vice Chancellor of Sa’adu Zungur University (SAZU), Professor Fatimah Tahir, has called on Nigerians to revisit and uphold the fundamental values exemplified by the country’s founding leaders. She made this appeal during the First Memorial Lecture held in honour of Nigeria’s first Prime Minister, Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa.
The lecture, themed "Peace as an Inspiration for National Development: The Legacies of Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa," was organized by the Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Centre for Peace and Security Studies of SAZU in Bauchi.
Professor Tahir described the event as an opportunity for reflection, remembrance, and renewed commitment to the principles that once unified the nation. She paid glowing tribute to Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, describing him as a model of humility, diplomacy, and peace-driven leadership.
“Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa’s name stands tall in the annals of Nigeria’s history. His legacy continues to inspire generations and reminds us of the values that once defined our national identity,” she said.
The Vice Chancellor also extended her appreciation to the Governor of Bauchi State, Senator Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed, for his consistent support for higher education and peace-building initiatives, particularly through the university.
She also acknowledged the presence of distinguished guests, including the Emir of Bauchi, Alhaji Dr. Rilwanu Suleimanu Adamu, who serves as Chancellor of SAZU; the Speaker of the Bauchi State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Abubakar Y. Suleiman; and the Guest Lecturer, Rt. Brigadier General Sani Usman Kuka Sheka (Rtd).
In his remarks, Speaker Abubakar Y. Suleiman, who chaired the occasion, commended the university’s Peace and Security Studies Centre for organizing the event. He described Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa as a visionary leader whose legacy continues to serve as a guidepost for leadership in Nigeria.
“Sir Abubakar’s unwavering dedication to peace, unity, and national progress offers vital lessons for today’s leaders. His leadership style remains worthy of emulation,” the Speaker said.
The memorial lecture series underscores SAZU’s commitment to advancing peace and security studies while preserving and celebrating the legacy of one of Nigeria’s most iconic leaders.
