Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi at 101: Scholars, Disciples Celebrate a Century of Islamic Scholarship and Virtue

By Abdulwahab Muhammad, Bauchi

Renowned Islamic scholar and spiritual leader of the Tijjaniyyah order in Nigeria, Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi, has clocked 101 years, according to the Islamic (Hijri) calendar. Born on the 2nd of Muharram, 1346 A.H., the Sheikh reached the significant milestone today, Friday, 2nd Muharram, 1447 A.H. (27th June, 2025).

Though no elaborate ceremony was held to mark the occasion, clerics, traditional leaders, students, and disciples across Nigeria and beyond offered special prayers and reflections, celebrating the Sheikh’s enduring impact on Islamic scholarship and spiritual guidance.

A Towering Legacy in Islamic Knowledge

Born in Nafada, now part of Gombe State, but historically under Bauchi State, Sheikh Dahiru began his Islamic education under his father, Alhaji Usman. He memorized the Holy Qur’an by age 19 and studied under prominent scholars across West Africa, including his most revered teacher, Sheikh Ibrāhīm Niyass of Senegal.

Known for his vast knowledge in Tafsir (Qur’anic exegesis), Tasawwuf (Sufism), and Islamic jurisprudence, Sheikh Dahiru is regarded globally as one of the greatest Mufassirun (Qur’anic interpreters). He began public Tafsir sessions in Bauchi in 1948, and his teachings have been broadcast since 1976 on Bauchi Radio, later expanding to Radio Nigeria Kaduna and other platforms across northern Nigeria.

Today, his Tafsir remains a Ramadan staple on several radio stations, drawing millions of listeners.

Scholar, Reformer, and Humble Patriarch

Sheikh Dahiru’s influence goes beyond religious interpretation. He is credited with establishing over 1,000 Quranic schools, Islamic centres, and farmlands to support students and promote Qur'anic memorization.

He lives modestly in Sheikh Tahir Islamic Centre, Bauchi, with only one room, a parlour, and a toilet for his personal use—despite owning hundreds of properties used solely to house students and children free of charge, according to Dr. Abubakar Sirimbai Dahiru, Secretary of the Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi Foundation.

The Sheikh has performed Hajj 63 times and Umrah 207 times, underscoring his deep devotion to Islamic rites.

A Family Rooted in Faith and Knowledge

Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi is blessed with a large family: 100 children, 406 grandchildren, and 100 great-grandchildren. Impressively, 78 children, over 199 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren are Hafizul Qur’an—many combining Islamic and Western education.

Defender of Morality, Voice of the Voiceless

The Sheikh is known for his bold stance against corruption, immorality, cultism, and drug abuse. He frequently preaches peace, unity, gratitude to Allah, and unwavering dedication to the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.).

As Deputy Chairman of the Fatwa Committee of the Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, his guidance continues to shape Islamic discourse and unity in Nigeria.

Tributes and Prayers from Across Nigeria

During the annual Dhikr event commemorating the Islamic New Year and the Sheikh’s birthday, Islamic scholars, traditional rulers, and disciples gathered to glorify Allah and pray for peace and stability in Nigeria.

“Maulana Sheikh, as he clocks 101 in good health, leaves a rich legacy of a life lived in the service of Allah, his nation, and humanity,” said Mallam Ahmad Tijjani Saeed.

Other prominent voices, including Mallam Ahmad Tijjani Kolo, Sanusi Ahmad, and Muhammad Sogiji, hailed the Sheikh’s courage and lifelong commitment to Islamic propagation, scholarship, and moral reform.

A Century of Light and Leadership

Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi’s unwavering commitment to teaching, preaching, and uniting Muslims across backgrounds has cemented his status as a living legend in Nigeria’s Islamic history. As he turns 101, his legacy of knowledge, humility, and spiritual depth continues to inspire generations.
