SDP Crisis Deepens: Suspended Chairman Gabam Faces EFCC Probe Over ₦1 Billion Party Funds

By Abdulwahab Muhammad

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) is currently engulfed in a deepening leadership crisis, as its National Working Committee (NWC) moves to expel suspended National Chairman, Alhaji Shehu Musa Gabam, alongside two other top officials, over serious allegations of misappropriating more than ₦1 billion in party funds.

The party has announced its intention to refer the case to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for investigation and possible prosecution, signaling what it calls a new era of transparency and accountability within the SDP.

Background to the Crisis

Gabam, along with Nze Nnadi Clarkson, the National Auditor, and Uchechukwu Chukwuma, the National Youth Leader, was suspended by the party on June 24, 2025. The suspension followed what the party described as “grave financial violations” and unauthorized movement of party funds.

In response to the alarming reports, the NWC inaugurated a 14-day investigative panel led by retired Air Vice Marshal Abubakar-Sadick Liman to probe the allegations.

Findings of the Investigative Panel

According to the panel’s final report submitted on Friday, July 19, only one of the three accused—Clarkson—appeared before the fact-finding committee. Both Gabam and Chukwuma failed to honour several invitations to defend themselves against the charges.

The panel unearthed:

  • Allegations of criminal conspiracy and financial misconduct,
  • Unauthorized withdrawals and diversion of funds,
  • Irregularities in the audited accounts submitted to INEC, and
  • A lack of internal financial approvals and documentation.

Panel chairman AVM Liman said, “From testimony received and documentary evidence provided by the NWC, we made significant findings. This report sends a clear message that the SDP is serious about discipline and reform.”

What Happens Next?

The SDP’s NWC is expected to:

  • Formally expel the suspended officials,
  • Submit the panel’s findings to the EFCC, and
  • Implement recommendations aimed at restoring financial discipline and public trust in the party.

Acting National Chairman, Dr. Sadiq Abubakar, has praised the panel’s efforts and reaffirmed the SDP’s commitment to cleansing its ranks.

A Defining Moment for the SDP

The internal disciplinary process has been hailed by party leaders and observers as a potential watershed moment in Nigerian party politics, where internal corruption is often ignored.

“This is no longer just an internal affair—it’s about showing Nigerians that political parties can hold their leaders accountable,” said a senior party source.

As the SDP prepares for upcoming elections and political realignments, this bold move could either strengthen its democratic credentials or further fracture the party, depending on how the fallout is managed.
