Empowering Bauchi: 800 Youths and Women Trained, Equipped for Entrepreneurship
From: Abdulwahab Muhammad Bauchí SSA COMMUNICATION

In a bold move to tackle unemployment and promote self-reliance, the Bauchi State Government, in collaboration with the Federal Government of Nigeria and the African Development Bank (AfDB), has successfully trained and empowered 800 youths and women across the state. The initiative, under the Inclusive Basic Service Delivery and Livelihood Empowerment Integrated Programme (IBSDLEIP), marks a significant milestone in the state’s drive toward sustainable development and economic inclusion.

 A Vision for Self-Reliance

The programme, which spans all 20 Local Government Areas of Bauchi State, was designed to equip participants with practical vocational skills that enable them to become employers of labour rather than job seekers. During a presentation ceremony held in Bauchi, beneficiaries received starter packs tailored to their respective trades, allowing them to immediately begin operations and contribute to their local economies.

Governor Senator Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed, represented by Dr. Aminu Hassan Gamawa, Chief of Staff, Government House, described the initiative as a testament to the government’s commitment to addressing youth restiveness and reducing dependence on white-collar jobs. He emphasized the importance of empowering citizens with the tools and knowledge to thrive independently and pledged continued support for similar programmes.

Skills That Build Futures

The training covered 22 vocational trades, including:
- Electrical and solar installations
- Motor vehicle repairs
- Plumbing and water fitting
- GSM device repairs
- Carpentry and woodwork
- Tailoring and dressmaking
- Photography and video production
- Hairdressing, barbing, knitting
- Aluminium fabrication
- Computer operations and maintenance
- Vulcanizing, among others

These trades were carefully selected to reflect market demand and community needs, ensuring that beneficiaries are well-positioned to succeed.

Collaboration That Delivers

Alhaji Garba Babaji Magaji, the State Project Coordinator, praised the discipline and dedication of the trainees throughout the months-long programme. He noted that the starter packs were not just tools, but gateways to independence, urging beneficiaries to use them responsibly to uplift their livelihoods and communities.

Alhaji Baba Isa Duguri, Chairman of the State Steering Committee, echoed these sentiments, describing the programme as a vital tool for curbing unemployment and fostering economic growth. He commended the unwavering support of Governor Bala Mohammed and the collaborative efforts of the Federal Government and AfDB in making the initiative a reality.

Boosting Local Economies

In a strategic policy shift, Governor Bala Mohammed has directed that local artisans—including carpenters, welders, and other skilled craftsmen—be prioritized in government projects. This move aims to stimulate local enterprise, create jobs, and reinforce the value of vocational training in state development.

Voices of Change

Beneficiaries who spoke to the press expressed heartfelt gratitude for the opportunity to acquire new skills and receive support to start their own businesses. Many pledged to make the most of the initiative, promising to become agents of change in their communities.
