Bauchi NAWOJ Honours Five Members for Dedication to Duty, Union Activities

By Beatrice Gondyi

As part of activities marking the 2025 International Women's Day (IWD) celebration, the Bauchi State Chapter of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) has honored five of its members for their dedication to duty and commitment to union activities.

The recognition aligns with Goal 5 of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which seeks to achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls. The award recipients include Beatrice Gondyi of the Correspondents’ Chapel, Saadatu Shall of Globe FM, Fibi Kafi of BATV Chapel, Diana Yohanna from the Ministry of Information, and Zainab Abdullahi Dass of BRC Chapel.

Similarly, in line with Aspiration 6 of the African Development Goals (ADGs), which focuses on people-driven development with emphasis on women and youth, the Publisher of Alheri Newspapers, Mu’azu Hardawa, presented an Award of Excellence to the State Chairperson of NAWOJ, Hajiya Rashida Yusuf. She was recognized for her outstanding contributions to the practice of journalism in Bauchi State.

Speaking at the event, the NAWOJ Chairperson commended the awardees for their sacrifices and contributions toward the growth and unity of the association. She noted that the honor was a way of appreciating their efforts in promoting gender equality through objective reportage.

In her presentation, the Director General of the Bauchi State SDGs Office, Lydia Shehu, stressed the importance of intellectual capacity over physical strength in achieving gender equality.

"Gender equality is not about physical strength but about intellectual capability. Women need to be at decision-making tables. Let us diversify and break barriers instead of using outdated methods to solve today’s problems," she stated.

Also speaking, Dr. Elizabeth Sab’atu Danladi encouraged NAWOJ members to integrate SDGs and ADGs into their reportage to give their work a global perspective. She emphasized that such content would enhance awareness and promote gender equality initiatives.

She further called for proper mentorship among female journalists and advocated for partnerships in capacity building, mentorship, and idea generation to strengthen their role in the media industry.

The event highlighted the commitment of NAWOJ to advancing gender equality and professional excellence among women journalists in Bauchi State.
