By Abdulwahab Muhammad, Bauchi

A deadly ambush by suspected bandits has claimed the lives of at least 19 people — including professional hunters and civilians — in Mansur Village, Alkaleri Local Government Area of Bauchi State.

The Bauchi State Police Command confirmed the attack and said a full-scale investigation is underway. Police Commissioner Sani-Omolori Aliyu has deployed tactical teams to the affected area and visited the scene for an on-the-spot assessment.

Details of the Attack

According to Police Public Relations Officer CSP Ahmed Mohammed Wakil, the incident occurred on May 4, 2025, when a combined patrol team of professional hunters from Duguri and Gwana Districts encountered an ambush by armed bandits during routine patrols along the Duguri-Mansur-Dajin Madam forest axis, which borders Plateau State.

The confrontation resulted in numerous casualties, including both hunters and civilians from nearby Sabuwar Sara village, who were reportedly shot while fleeing the scene.

“Preliminary investigations revealed that the deceased included both quasi-security operatives and unarmed civilians,” said Wakil in a statement. “The Command has mandated a specialised team to pursue and apprehend the culprits responsible for this heinous act.”

Community Confirms Casualties

Local residents reported that nine professional hunters and ten civilians were killed in the attack. Funeral prayers for the hunters were conducted in Mansur Village, where they were buried in accordance with Islamic rites.

“We pray to Almighty Allah to protect our communities and bring peace to Bauchi State,” a community elder told reporters.

Police Response and Condolences

Commissioner Sani condemned the killings as "utterly reprehensible" and a grave threat to peace and security. He urged residents to remain calm and vigilant, assuring them that law enforcement agencies are committed to bringing the perpetrators to justice.

“We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and the entire community,” said Wakil. “This tragedy will not go unanswered.”

Call for Vigilance

Police authorities are appealing to residents for cooperation and useful information that could aid the ongoing investigation. The public is also encouraged to remain alert and report any suspicious activity in their area.
