In a significant move to confront the rising tide of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) in Gombe State, the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development—working in partnership with the Centre for the Study and Resolution of Domestic Violence—hosted a roundtable discussion aimed at building a unified front against GBV.
Supported by the Norwegian Government through the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), the event convened a diverse group of key stakeholders including women councillors, wives of the eleven local government chairmen, civil society organizations, and representatives of security agencies.
Government Reaffirms Commitment
Gombe State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Mrs. Asma’u Mohammed Iganus, reaffirmed the government’s unwavering commitment to eliminating GBV and its harmful consequences. She encouraged the women councillors and wives of local government chairmen to lead awareness campaigns at the grassroots level to strengthen community response and prevention.
Call for Collective Action
Professor Hauwa Yusuf of Kaduna State University addressed the gathering with a strong message on collaboration. “The fight against gender-based violence cannot be won in silos,” she said. “Women leaders, civil society, and institutions must work together to create lasting change.”
Legislative Support and Budgetary Promise
Speaking to journalists at the event, Mr. Gabriel Galadima, Chairman of the Gombe State House Committee on GBV, expressed optimism in the current administration’s approach to tackling GBV. He pledged increased budgetary allocation to support anti-GBV initiatives and related programs across the state.
Recognition of Champions
A highlight of the roundtable was the official conferment of “GBV Ambassador” titles to the participating women councillors, wives of local government chairmen, and select stakeholders. The honor recognized their leadership and commitment in driving anti-GBV efforts within their respective communities.
