Digging for Change: NAWOJ Empowers Bauchi Women Journalists with Home Gardening Skills.
In a fresh move to promote food security and nutrition, the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Bauchi State Chapter, has trained 40 female journalists on home gardening — turning backyard spaces into mini farms with big potential.
The one-day hands-on training, held in partnership with Rural Urban Women Green Initiative (RUGWI), aimed to spark agricultural interest and self-reliance among women storytellers.
NAWOJ Chairperson, Mrs. Rashida Yusuf, said the goal was clear:
“This is about more than just growing vegetables — it’s about growing confidence, income, and better health.”
She encouraged women to see home gardens as both a nutritional boost and a springboard into agribusiness.
For RUGWI, the training fits perfectly with its grassroots mission. Prof. Khadija Bello, Chair of the NGO, said:
“We want to bridge the gap between knowledge and action — from peasant farming to profit-making.”
Participants got their hands dirty in a soil quality masterclass, learning what makes a garden thrive. By day’s end, they walked away with sacks, seedlings, and starter kits to begin their green journey.
🌿 From press rooms to planting beds — Bauchi’s women journalists are proving that media and agriculture can grow together.
End.
