UN Assistant Secretary-General, Other Dignitaries Attend Dazzling Durbar
It was a grand spectacle in Gombe on Sunday, 8th June 2025, as Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, CON, received the Emir of Gombe, Alhaji (Dr.) Abubakar Shehu Abubakar III, CFR, on the annual Sallah homage known as Hawan Gidan Gwamnati — a rich cultural tradition that continues to unite the people of Gombe.
The 1446 AH / 2025 Eid El-Kabir celebration brought together the traditional institution and state leadership in a colourful and symbolic gathering at the Government House, Gombe. The Emir, accompanied by district heads, traditional titleholders, and hundreds of horsemen in dazzling regalia, led the procession — showcasing the vibrancy of Gombe’s heritage.
Adding international prestige to the event was the presence of Mr. Mohammed Fall, the United Nations Assistant Secretary-General and the UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria. The Senegalese diplomat chose to celebrate Eid in Gombe — a decision inspired by the peace, stability, and visionary governance the state is known for.
Governor Inuwa Yahaya: “We Are Building a Legacy”
In his remarks, Governor Inuwa Yahaya thanked Almighty Allah for the blessing of Eid and the sustained peace in the state. He paid glowing tribute to the Emir and the Gombe Emirate Council for preserving cultural traditions and offering wise counsel to his administration.
“Your Highness, your fatherly guidance has shaped many of our policies. You remain a pillar of support to our government and the people,” the governor said.
Governor Yahaya used the opportunity to announce a transformative project — the establishment of a 184-hectare Agro-Livestock Industrial Zone that will feature:
- An ultramodern abattoir
- An international livestock market
- A global-standard grains market
These facilities, he explained, will create thousands of jobs, strengthen food security, and reposition Gombe as a major player in Nigeria’s agro-economy.
He also reaffirmed commitment to other legacy projects currently underway, including:
- Gombe Inland Dry Port
- State Secretariat Complex
- New House of Assembly and High Court Complexes
The Governor emphasized that these projects will bring an end to the outdated practice of renting office spaces for MDAs, while also modernizing public service infrastructure.
On the Kolmani oil project, Governor Yahaya reiterated his administration’s resolve to ensure Gombe fully benefits from the natural resources discovered within its territory, in collaboration with Bauchi State and development partners.
“Even as our time winds down, we remain focused. We will not relent. Our aim is to leave behind a legacy that generations will be proud of,” he declared.
Emir of Gombe: “Your Vision Speaks Volumes”
Earlier, Emir Abubakar Shehu Abubakar III, CFR, said the Sallah homage was not just a celebration, but also an occasion to appreciate the Governor for his tireless service.
“Your Excellency, your vision for Gombe is unmatched. Over the past six years, your strides in governance and development speak for themselves,” the Emir stated.
He highlighted some of the administration’s major achievements:
- Renovation and construction of over 3,000 classrooms
- Establishment of five mega schools
- Effective mop-up of out-of-school children
- Revitalization of healthcare facilities
- Expansion of the Gombe Regional Water Supply Scheme
In agriculture, the Emir commended the consistent distribution of subsidized fertilizers and the development of the Muhammadu Buhari Industrial Park. He also mentioned the Gombe Northern Bypass and modern abattoir project as timely initiatives that will ease animal transport logistics and reduce losses.
Notably, he praised Governor Inuwa’s efforts to revive the Balanga Dam, first built in 1978, through canal construction and a power generation project in collaboration with development partners.
A Durbar Like No Other
The event culminated in a dazzling durbar procession. Traditional horsemen paraded in majestic regalia, thrilling spectators with a display of culture, gallantry, and unity. The vibrant spectacle served as a reminder of Gombe’s rich traditions and harmonious coexistence.
In the spirit of Sallah, Governor Inuwa Yahaya presented a symbolic Goron Sallah (Sallah gift) to the Emir, reinforcing the strong ties between the traditional institution and the state government.
