Gombe Farmers Get a Major Boost as Governor Inuwa Yahaya Launches 2025 Farming Season with Fertilizer Subsidy

Affordable fertilizer, bigger supply, and strict monitoring to fuel food security in Gombe

By Abdulwahab Muhammad Bauchí

Gombe State is set for a productive farming season as Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, CON, flagged off the 2025 wet farming season with a powerful show of support for local farmers.

At a well-attended event, the Governor announced a game-changing subsidy that will see farmers buy NPK 20:10:10 fertilizer at just N27,000 per bag — a massive reduction from the market price of N44,000. Even more impressive? The state has secured 10,000 metric tons (that’s 200,000 bags!) of fertilizer — more than double what was made available last year.

“This is our way of saying thank you to our farmers. Agriculture is the backbone of our state, and we’re determined to make it affordable and productive for everyone,” Governor Inuwa Yahaya declared.

Strengthening Gombe’s Position in Nigeria’s Food Security Drive

The Governor highlighted that over 80% of Gombe’s people depend on farming, making these interventions crucial for livelihoods and the economy. He linked the initiative to President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda, which puts agriculture at the centre of Nigeria’s development.

Beyond fertilizer, Governor Inuwa Yahaya outlined ongoing projects that are turning Gombe into a true agricultural hub. These include:

  • The Agro-Livestock Development Zone with an international grains market, abattoir, and inland dry port.
  • The Muhammadu Buhari Industrial Park, where Premier Seeds Nigeria Ltd now runs a cutting-edge seed-processing facility.
  • Strong partnerships with the World Bank, African Development Bank, and Federal Government on programs like Sasakawa, NG-CARES, L-PRES, RAAMP, and ACReSAL.

Zero Tolerance for Diversion

Governor Inuwa didn’t mince words on transparency. He directed the Ministry of Agriculture, security agencies, and civil society groups to keep a close eye on fertilizer distribution — ensuring it reaches real farmers, not middlemen.

“Anyone caught diverting fertilizer meant for our farmers will be dealt with. We owe it to our people to protect this intervention,” he warned.

A Call for Peace and Vigilance

The Governor urged farmers to make good use of the inputs and follow weather advice to avoid losses. He also renewed his call for peaceful coexistence between farmers and herders, stressing that anyone — including traditional rulers — found fueling conflict through encroachment will face consequences.

Federal Government Backs Gombe’s Effort

Delivering a goodwill message, Mr. Absalom Akwaras Lansibol, Acting State Coordinator, Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, praised Gombe’s leadership in agricultural transformation.

“Governor Inuwa Yahaya’s passion for agriculture is clear. This is how we secure food, jobs, and prosperity,” he said.

End.
